This is our 36’ Improved Mono Rig (2-pack) in Stealth Black. It's a great formula if you like to let your color sighter section do all the talking, while keeping a minimal visual reference for your leader butt section.

We’ve refined this custom leader through thousands of hours on the river to give you the best possible advantage landing trout in any sub-surface situation. Use it to fish nymphs (both tight line and indicator styles, with or without split shot), streamers, dry-dropper, and wets. This is an incredibly versatile system that provides both expert and new fly fishers with better control, contact, and strike detection than traditional euro-nymphing lines.

It starts off with a 32’ butt section of 20# low-memory mono that’ll give you plenty of power to get your flies exactly where you want them. Below the butt section it tapers through a 4’ hand-tied, alternating color / weight sighter section (15# optic green, 12# hi viz red, 10# optic green) — ending at a 2mm tippet ring.

The way we hand-tie these leaders gives you great accuracy and feel on the turnover…you’re going to love it.

  • Just connect this rig to your fly line backing loop with a simple 3 or 4-turn clinch knot.
  • Then give the line a good stretch by hand over its entire length. Do this every time you go out — it reduces line memory to minimize coiling and gives you the softest, straightest possible tool to work with.
  • Finally, add an appropriate length and weight of tippet based on what you’re targeting, and your depth conditions. For nymphing, we recommend using just a single diameter of 4x, 5x, or 6x fluorocarbon tippet (we like Scientific Anglers best). We find this choice minimizes seam-crossing issues, and keeps your drifts completely natural and drag-free. If you’re fishing streamers on this rig, anything from 0x to 4x will work great, depending on what you’re targeting.

Our mono rigs come in recyclable “puck” containers that are easy to keep in your vest or pack. Or you can put the spools right on your tippet holder to make on-stream setup changes even easier.

If you’ve read this far, you already know nymphs and other subsurface insects make up about 90% of a trout's diet. Maybe you've tried other mono rigs before and had mixed success. Well, we think you'll find our improved version is the most versatile rig out there -- it just flat out produces, and we always have them in stock. Try it out and you’ll be amazed at how effective this setup makes you on the water.
